Lessons from my Grandfather's Grave

My grandfather once said
“One day, the rain will pour,
It’ll slam against your windows
And seep through your front door.
It’ll ruin your back fence
And run down the gutter drain,
It’ll wake you in the night
And you’ll watch from your window-pane”
He smiled with this look,
That I had never seen,
It was the kind of smile
That showed all the places he had been.
“You see, my dear,
It will rain for days and days,
And you’ll believe it won’t ever stop,
But you will realize,
Just as I did,
When you see the last raindrop.
Everything must come to an end,
There is no other way,
It’s a lesson I should have learnt,
But now it’s much too late”
My grandfather once said,
“One day, the clouds will clear
The sun will peak through your curtains
And you’ll know, summer is here.
It’ll dry up all your flowers
And the color of your house will fade
But there is nothing like the beauty
You’ll see, on that lovely day.
The skies will be as blue
As the ocean on a calm morning
And you’ll forget about the days
When the rain wouldn’t stop pouring.
Your house will become warm
And you’ll sleep by the fan,
You’ll start to miss the cool breeze,
But your days will still be grand.
You see, my dear,
There is always good within the bad
You’ll learn this lesson,
Just as I have.
Sometimes, you’ll feel like the sand
Beneath people’s feet,
And other days, you’ll be the ocean
That flows without defeat.
You are so much, I promise you,
Let nobody tell you less,
You’re the wind within the trees
And my stars, I must confess.”
My grandfather once said,
“One day, you will see
Just how wonderful
This world can be.
You’ll have your days,
Your ups and your downs,
But never let the rain,
Cause you to frown.
As one day,
You’ll meet the love of your life,
And he’ll illuminate the darkness
And you’ll only see light.
I won’t lie to you, my dear,
It won’t be easy,
But your grandmother was
The best thing to ever happen to me.
Despite the battles we had to face,
There is nobody else
In the human race,
That could make me smile
Just as she did,
And there is no place
I could’ve hid.
She was the sun
That seeped through my window
And I wish I never had to
Let her go. “
My grandfather once said,
That sometimes it was okay to gamble,
If I used my head.
He told me that it was good to dream,
And that she was the greatest beauty
He had ever seen.
He taught me how to love
And see the good within the bad,
He told me to be brave
And take care of those I had.
He taught me everything
I had ever needed to know,
But I never thought I’d have to
Let him go.
He was my favorite person,
And never will there be,
Anyone who could replace
The light he lit within me.
